Garden Gift Guide for the Holidays

The holidays are around the corner. This gift guide showcases some of our favorite products and services, great for every gardener.

Why are garden-themed gifts a good choice for the holidays?

The best gifts are truly the ones that are small luxuries. Things we covet but wouldn’t necessarily spend money on for ourselves and many garden gifts fall under this category. The garden is often a practical space but it also can be one of lush growth and beauty and there are so many great garden gifts I’m excited to share with you.

What is trendy this year?

So much is trendy this year and more than ever, there are some really great products to talk about. Extending your season into the fall and growing over the winter is super trendy. Mushroom kits, microgreens and sprouting are all super on trend and make a great gift.

Also trendy is good quality garden gear. Who doesn’t want a great pair of overalls or a shirt that keeps the sun off. Surprisingly (for some), Patagonia has a great line of outdoor workwear that is super functional in the garden. We love their hemp canvas overalls, they’ve got great dry-wicking capilene shirts and sun barrier shirts, shorts and pants that keep the harmful UV rays away. This is a great gift that will be much appreciated and we should know, we REALLY love getting this type of gift.

Learning to grow

Our garden-to-table master class, A Year in the Urban Garden makes an incredible gift. It’s punctuated by 12 immersive module videos with a massive written component that is hosted online and offers participants garden plan reviews and one on one email support throughout the season. It's a gift that will last someone their lifetime.

Things not to gift your garden friends

This is meant to be a bit tongue in cheek, however, take heart. Sometimes it's better to not gift certain items. For example, we advise that you don’t gift larger garden tools. It is really important that the person using the tool be able to find it comfortable and ergonomic. Larger tools can be heavy and because using them is personal andheight-dependentt, so those are better left to the individual gardener to choose. That said, a gift card for larger tools can go a long way, it’s just a little less… sexy?

Gifts that are great for a tight budget

Without a doubt, seeds are at the top of this list. For flower seeds, check out Johnny’s Seeds and Floret, which are both American but tend to have new varieties of seeds that are of great quality. Some seeds at the top of our list right now from Floret are the Apricot Cosmos and the Black Eyed Susan Indian Summer variety.

Another gift that’s budget-friendly is a set of terracotta planters. Terracotta never goes out of style and receiving some nice pottery that you can use indoors or outdoors feels luxurious no matter the price point.

Garden books are also a great budget item, you can find some really great titles secondhand and stretch your dollar.

Gifts if you want to splurge

This is for the gardener in your life that you know needs a bit of spoiling. We're partial to beautiful pieces in the garden that will last a long time. Hawes watering cans are an obvious choice in this category. They are beautiful and made of quality materials. They have a great watering wand as well. We also think that you think about gifting some true heirloom plants. Think David Austin Roses, which are truly spectacular and breathtaking but can be quite expensive. If you’re not that well acquainted with the garden space of your gift recipient, you can splurge on some Frances Palmer pottery which is truly special. Her works start from around $300 USD.

Garden gifts for kids and teens

YES! Start the garden passion YOUNG. Lee Valley Tools has a great kids’ hand tool set that Melissa's kids love to use. Bright colors engage the children and they are wonderfully ergonomic for their hands. There are lots of them in the kit so if you lose a few it’s not noticeable. Teens do well with indoor grow systems like the Click and Grow. It’s an easy and cool feature to add to their desktops. Pressed flower-making kits also are a budget-friendly idea.

What would you most like to receive?

Oooh. Tough question. For Melissa, some antique books on gardening for her garden book collection - there are so many garden books from the 1800s that she would love to add to her collection. For Luay, hardware store gift cards so he can buy all the lumber he needs to rebuild his allotment plot garden in the spring of 2023!

Happy Holidays!
